Notification of SoarnoL and Soarlite Price Increase

Tuesday 15th March 2022

The recent geopolitical events have caused a substantial hike in costs especially on energy and fuel. These additional charges are impacting the manufacturing costs of SoarnoL™ EVOH.

Notification of SoarnoL™, Soarlite™ and Soaresin™ Price Increase

Tuesday 1st February 2022

Effective March 1, 2022 Mitsubishi Chemical UK Ltd will increase the selling price for all grades of SoarnoL™, Soarlite™ and Soaresin™ in EMEA.

SoarnoL™ (EVOH)

a Packaging Material for Preserving Flavour and Freshness.

Ancient wisdom for modern times

Since ancient times people have devised various techniques to preserve freshness and flavour to maintain the natural taste in foods, "wrapping" is one of those techniques. In ancient Japan, bamboo leaves and bark were commonly used to wrap foods. The invention of cans and bottles in the mid-19th century significantly prolonged food life. Today, SoarnoL™ offers innovative food-packaging technology by shutting out oxygen to prevent decomposition and the growth of mould, while maintaining transparency.SoarnoL™ (EVOH) Applications

What is SoarnoL™ (EVOH)?

SoarnoL™ (EVOH), is a trade name of Ethylene-Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer originally developed through years of research. SoarnoL™ is mainly composed of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, has no toxic gases when burned, and its combustion heat is only half that of polyethylene, causing little harm to the environment.

Several field trials conducted in the last seven (7) years by University of Turin (IT) in co-operation with our European Team have proven that the high oxygen barrier properties of a co-extruded film with SoarnoL™ Special Grade does indeed preserve and improve the quality of forage, both in Wrapped Bales and Bunker silos. This also improves the long term conservation of the Grass.

Meat Packaging

SoarnoL™ (EVOH) Applications - Meat Packaging

Smart packaging solutions could help manufactures impress their consumers by many ways. Packaging of meat is critical, especially when it comes to fresh meat.

Packaging doesn’t just function as a protective shield, it is the package itself has characteristics, plays a big role.

Implementing SoarnoL™ as a barrier in the packaging material extends the shelf life of meat.

Whatever the package type is, SoarnoL™ has a wide range of grades to meet the manufacturer's need.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging
SoarnoL™ (EVOH) Applications Modified Atmosphere Packaging

Since fresh meat is very perishable and weight loss due to dehydration can increase the rate of decay, extending shelf life remains a key objective for packaging.

Requirements for fresh meat packaging have increased considerably over recent years.

SoarnoL™ has outstanding barrier properties against gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon doixide and helium, these gases are widely used in MAP (Modified Atmosphere Package) packages.

SoarnoL™ (EVOH) Applications - Bag-In-Box

Bag-in-Box or BiB is a special type of flexible container for transportation, storage and protection of liquid products. The standard structure of BiB packaging consists of two different films. The internal film is a mono-layer PE-bag and externally there is a co-extruded multi-layer film with a SoarnoL™ barrier layer.

A vast range of products can be packaged in ready made BiB's including wine, juice, water, ketchup and many more. BiB packaging has many advantages such as being cost effective, required less material, is easy to label and has a low carbon foot print.

For example a box of wine, our SoarnoL™ protects the wine against oxidation whilst the box eliminates the risk of cork taint or spoilage. SoarnoL™ has a vast range of grades to meet your requirement.

Baby Food Packaging

SoarnoL™ (EVOH) Baby Food Packaging

Today, one of the main uses of SoarnoL™ (EVOH) is in baby-food packaging, replacing the glass and metal used in Form Fill Seal processes.

The main advantages of SoarnoL™ barrier film or sheet over existing packaging technology are as follows; SoarnoL™ is light weight, unbreakable, has incredible protective qualities against oxygen and good insulation properties. All of these features help to protect the sensitive vitamin content in baby-food.

PP/SoarnoL™/PP is one typical structure. This SoarnoL™ structure can be used in microwavable, pasteurisable or retortable applications, whilst maintaining maximum shelf life. In these applications, the SoarnoL™ barrier works as a shield against permeation of oxygen, moisture and UV rays. It also protects the flavour and aroma in the product.

Agricultural Film Applications

Several field trials conducted in the last seven (7) years by University of Turin (IT) in co-operation with our European Team have proven that the high oxygen barrier properties of a co-extruded film with SoarnoL™ Special Grade does indeed preserve and improve the quality of forage,  both in Wrapped Bales and Bunker silos. This also improves the long term conservation of the Grass.

Benefits of less Oxygen penetration by using SoarnoL™ into silage film brings:

PE Film
  • Decreased Dry Matter (DM) loss
  • Increased energy value of forage
  • Reduced amount of Mycotoxins and other Pathogens
  • Lower level of contaminated forage which further reduces:
    • Animal Health problems
    • Waste of milk

SoarnoL™ (EVOH) Applications - Bottles

SoarnoL™ (EVOH) is used in many products that are an indispensable part of our daily lives. Since 1974, SoarnoL™ has been used as a barrier layer in mayonnaise bottles. By shutting out the oxygen, which is a major factor in mayonnaise quality deterioration, SoarnoL™ enabled a dramatic increase in the shelf life of mayonnaise. Now a days SoarnoL™ is used to successfully bottle many other products.

SoarnoL™ (EVOH) Tubes

SoarnoL™ (EVOH) is also used for the packaging of creams, tooth paste, cosmetics and many other 'Fast Moving Consumer Goods'.

Its ability to prevent oxidation of oils or chemicals that make up the components of cosmetics and to preserve other aromatic components, has attracted a great deal of attention, expanding the use of SoarnoL™ as a barrier material.

SoarnoL™ (EVOH) Applications - Pipes

Floor heating pipes that were once made primarily of metal are now increasingly being replaced by plastics. Traditionaly monolayer pipes such as polyethylene cross-linked (XPE), polypropylene (PP), polybutene (PB) however allow oxygen to diffuse through them, and hot water containing oxygen corrodes the metal parts in pumps and boilers.

To resolve this problem, various grades of SoarnoL™ [with their excellent oxygen barrier properties] for pipe use were developed that include resistance to resin deterioration under hot water conditions so as to comply with the well known German DIN 4726 standard (which calls for hot water pipes to function for 50 years with no degradation in performance).

Thus SoarnoL™ functions as booster to protect the pipes underneath the floor level.

Plastic Fuel Tank

SoarnoL™ (EVOH) Applications - Plastic Fuel Tank

For many years, there has been an increasing need for high added value in the automotive industry, such as the pursuit of spatial comfort and more compact body design. One example is the increased need for more lightweight, rustproof and space utilising fuel tanks. Currently, particularly in the West, fuel tanks are increasingly being made of resin. High density polyethylene (HDPE) is being used as the primary material in plastic fuel tanks (PFT). However, with HDPE alone, it is not possible to prevent the spread of the gasoline (a volatile organic compound) from the tank to the outside air. The use of SoarnoL™ with its high gasoline barrier properties resolves this problem.

Consequently SoarnoL™ is contributing to both the development of the automotive industry and the preservation of the environment.
